Call for Design Works for the 2023 Global Zodiac Design Competition (Guimao Year of the Rabbit)


1/Competition Description:

2023 is the Guimao Year of the Rabbit in Chinese Lunar Calendar. Docile and gentle, the rabbit is a symbol of purity and beauty, and is adored as an auspicious animal in Chinese folk customs. Characterized by exuberant vitality, the rabbit symbolizes endless life, a big family with many children, longevity and good fortunes. In ancient times, the rabbit often appeared together with the moon, hence its reputation as "the spirit of the bright moon".

The Chinese Zodiac represents an important part of Chinese traditional culture, and conveys wishes for good fortunes, harmony and happiness. As part of the cultural genes of Chinese people, the Chinese Zodiac is an emotional bond connecting all the people of Chinese descent across the world. The Global Zodiac Design Competition (Guimao Year of the Rabbit) is a signature cultural event co-sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Adopting the image of Chinese Zodiac "Rabbit" as its theme, the event collects excellent design works from all across the world, aimed at spreading the Chinese culture of Zodiac and Spring Festival and promoting cultural exchanges through design. The event is an effort to give new vitality and influence to the Chinese Zodiac, by telling China’s stories and communicating the Chinese voice.

2/Design Direction:

1. Graphic design, multi-media and interactive design

1. Participants should create graphic design works centered around the image and meaning of the Year of the Rabbit while incorporating the elements of the Chinese New Year. They may also draw inspiration from the image of the Year of the Rabbit to design positive, interesting and characteristic works showcasing the charm of the Chinese culture. There is no restriction on the form of representation, including but not limited to 2D, 3D, web design, UI design, APP design, advertisement/film/new media short film (between 15 seconds and 3 minutes, no style restrictions), and interactive design.

(1) Image logo, themed poster, VI extension design, IP image design of the Rabbit Zodiac and “Happy Chinese New Year”.

(2) IP image design with the theme of the Year of the Rabbit.

(3) Graphic/product packaging design series with the theme of the Year of the Rabbit, among others.

2. Product design
We welcome cultural and creative products designed based on the images and implications of Chinese Zodiac Rabbit. The design may incorporate such elements as Chinese Spring Festival, traditional craftsmanship and the Chinese Zodiac culture. The design works shall revisit the traditional culture of the Chinese Zodiac with a prospect for the future, to highlight both tradition and innovation. Without restrictions to form and appearance, such products shall emphasize cultural attribute, craftsmanship and creativity. Cultural and creative product series with the theme of the Year of the Rabbit will be preferred.

(1) Designs of cultural and creative products that reflect the theme of Zodiac Rabbit and incorporate traditional craftsmanship;
(2) Designs incorporating Chinese Zodiac Rabbit elements into modern life, culture and entertainment, etc.;
(3) Designs of clothing, accessories and textiles with the theme of Zodiac Rabbit;
(4) Designs of household items, office supplies, stationery, toys and electronic products with the theme of Zodiac Rabbit.

3. Yuanmingyuan theme design
Designs in this section should integrate the IP of “Zodiac + Yuanmingyuan” through a meaningful representation of Chinese traditional culture, and the charm of traditional Zodiac culture in particular. Designs that prioritize both the practical and artistic aspects of the products are specially encouraged.
The designs are not limited to graphic and product designs.

3/ Competition Timeline:
Duration of Competition: July 1229, 2022 – October 30, 2022 (Beijing Time)
Design Submission: July 1329, 2022 - October 9, 2022 (Beijing Time)
Deadline for Submission: 23:59, October 9, 2022 (Beijing Time)
Time for Online Evaluation: Early October, 2022
Time for Online Mid-term Evaluation: Late October, 2022
Final Offline Evaluation: End of October, 2022
Announcement of Award Winners: November, 2022

4/Registration
Universities, enterprises, design studios and independent designers from various countries and regions can sign up either as groups and individuals for the competition online and offline within the specified time.
The participant could register on the designated website www.bocec.cn or enter the designated Competition webpage through the Competition’s media platforms.

5/Awards
1. Prizes for the graphic design, multimedia and interactive design section: (the following prizes are all pre-tax amounts)
One winner of the first prize, awarded CNY 10,000 (pre-tax) and the 1st prize certificate;
Two winners of the second prize, awarded CNY 5,000 (pre-tax) and the 2nd prize certificate;
Three winners of the third prize, awarded CNY 2,000 (pre-tax) and the 3rd prize certificate;
Ten winners of the excellent prize, awarded CNY 1,000 (pre-tax) and the excellent prize certificate;
Twenty winners of the finalist prize, awarded the finalist prize certificate

2. Prizes for the product design section: (the following prizes are all pre-tax amounts)
One winner of the first prize, awarded CNY 10,000 (pre-tax) and the 1st prize certificate;
Two winners of the second prize, awarded CNY 5,000 (pre-tax) and the 2nd prize certificate;
Three winners of the third prize, awarded CNY 2,000 (pre-tax) and the 3rd prize certificate;
Ten winners of the excellent prize, awarded CNY 1,000 (pre-tax) and the excellent prize certificate;
Twenty winners of the finalist prize, awarded the finalist prize certificate

3. Yuanmingyuan design award
For graphic and product designs that take the 12 bronze heads of Zodiac animals in Yuanmingyuan as the source of inspiration, 30 honorable mention prizes will be given, with prize certificates.
The Competition also offers a professional organization award. Based on the evaluation of design quality, 10 groups of participants from colleges and universities will be given the organization award, each with a prize of 2,000 yuan (pre-tax) and a prize certificate.


6/Design Requirements
1. The design works, in content and form, shall comply with Chinese laws and regulations as well as relevant policies, without offending public order or good morals.
2. The design works, in content and form, shall be free of pornography, violence, infringement of others’ privacy or any content unsuitable for publicity.
3. The design works, in content and form, shall not violate any specific religious taboo.
4. The design works, in content and form, shall fully exhibit Chinese cultural elements, with a certain capacity of international communication. The works should express positive values in addition to expressing Chinese cultural essence.
5. All participants must ensure that their works are original and closely related to the Competition theme, and show creativity, appeal and sound visual effects.
6. Maximum 3 authors for each piece (set) of group works (Maximum 5 authors for 2D and 3D animations). A series of works will be regarded as one piece (set).


7/ Specification Requirements
1. No restrictions on design style, appearance and form of representation, nor on the software used. The work shall be submitted in the form of electronic copy with resolution width>500px and height>600px. Upload the work in jpg, jpeg or png format under the mode of RGB, with the file size ≤15MB. Please briefly explain your ideas of design.
2. The product design work shall include product name, final effect images, design description, material and process description, etc.. The final effect images shall show the overall and partial effects of the work.
3. For multi-media, interactive design work, a video shall be provided with a duration between 15 seconds and 3 minutes. Moreover, the video shall be in flv, mpg, avi, wmv, mov, asf, rm, rmvb, mkv, m4v or mp4 format, with the resolution of 480*274 px or above and a maximum size of 500MB. The video genre can be documentary, drama, animation, MV, etc.
4. The layout of the design shall NOT include the designer’s name (including abbreviation in English or Chinese), institution or any logo, graphics or other information related to the designer’s identity.
5. The designer shall prepare 300dpi bitmap source file or vector file (such as files in AI, CDR, PSD, PNG) for media transmission, design printing and production, so that he/she can submit such files to the organizers for offline publicity and promotion as required after his/her works is selected.

9/Requirements for Work Uploading:
1. To register online and upload the electronic files, please log on to the official website and click “Participate in the Competition” to upload your works.
2. If the same user submits more than one piece of work, please upload your works separately so as to create an independent link for each work.
3. The registration form (electronic version) shall be filled in online.


10/Notes (copyright declaration)
In accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of China, the organizers believe that “participants” and “authors” submitting their works on a voluntary basis have made the following irrevocable statements on the copyrights of the works submitted:
1. Originality statement: the works submitted for the Competition and personal representative works are all original works of the participants without infringement of any patent, copyright, trademark right or other intellectual property right of any third party; these works have not been publicized in any newspaper, magazine, website or other media, and have not applied for any patent or been registered for copyright, or participated in other competitions or entered the commercial channel in any manner. Otherwise, the organizers will cancel the qualification of the author for shortlisting and awards, revoke prize and prize certificate given to them, and reserve the right to further investigate the participant’s legal responsibilities.
2. Ownership of the works-related intellectual property rights: After an original design wins any award, its author shall sign the letter of commitment for transferring the works-related intellectual property rights, and submit the source file of the award-winning work. All related copyrights of the work other than the relevant authorship belong to the competition organizers, and the competition organizers have the rights to distribute, display or promote all award-winning works or use such works for commercial purposes. Without authorization, any other establishment or individual (including the author) is prohibited to transfer, copy, duplicate, reprint, disseminate, excerpt, publicize, distribute or license such works in any manner.
3. Before submitting their works, the participants have carefully read, fully understood and acknowledged the above terms and clauses. Otherwise, the competition organizers are entitled to cancel their qualification for participation, shortlisting and awards, and revoke the prize and the prize certificate given to them.
