8th International Editorial Gartoon Competition 2008

CANADIAN COMMITTEE FOR WORLD PRESS FREEDOM

1. The theme for the 8th International Editorial Cartoon Competition is:

" Rewriting history "

Turkey continues to deny the Armenian genocide, Japanese schoolbooks are silent on mass murders in China and sexual enslavement of "comfort women" during the last world war, while Iran denies the Holocaust, a historical fact of great magnitude, in order to viscously undermine an enemy: these are among the many contemporary examples of re-writing history to portray themselves or their ambitions in a better light.
In Canada, a complaint from a Quebec nationalist group recently prompted the removal of a display panel about Lord Durham, a 19th Century British statesman who urged the assimilation of French Canadians into English Canada, while a public outcry from veterans of World War II forced the Canadian War Museum to modify an exhibition on the bombing of Dresden, about which controversy with regard to the human cost and impact on the course of the war continues.
