International Humor Sapiens Award

With the purpose of recognizing and encouraging the study, reflection, and promotion of humor as a cultural, artistic, social, and human phenomenon, the Humor Sapiens International Award was created.

This annual award is granted by the website Humor Sapiens, a reference platform in the field of humor studies since its foundation in 2013. The prize seeks to highlight the work of those who, through research, teaching, criticism, creation, or cultural management, contribute significantly to the understanding and appreciation of humor in its many dimensions.

Each year, the Humor Sapiens International Award is presented in two categories:

a) Outstanding Individual: to a scholar, researcher, thinker, or promoter of humor.

b) Outstanding Institution: to an organization, center, or entity that fosters the knowledge, practice, or dissemination of humor for cultural, artistic, educational, or social purposes.

Through this award, Humor Sapiens reaffirms its vocation to be a bridge between laughter and thought, between fun and wisdom, between humor and its rigorous study.

We invite the entire community engaged with reflective and cultural humor to send us well-argued nominations of candidates (both individuals and institutions) deemed worthy of this recognition.

Include the following in the body of the message:

Full name of the person or institution being nominated

Brief biographical or institutional summary (max. 300 words)

Reasons why you believe they deserve the award

(Optional) Link to website, publications, works, or relevant projects

Nominations will be accepted until: October 15, 2025

The Humor Sapiens committee will evaluate all proposals and also reserves the right to consider candidates suggested directly by the organization.

Winners will be officially announced in the November 2025 Newsletter, published on October 31, and on our website humorsapiens.com that same day. They will receive an exclusive trophy and an honorary diploma.

With the purpose of recognizing and encouraging the study, research, reflection, and promotion of humor as a cultural, artistic, social, and human phenomenon, the Humor Sapiens International Award 2025 has been granted to an outstanding individual and an outstanding institution that have made exceptional contributions to this field.

Outstanding Individual:

Osvaldo Macedo de Sousa (Portugal)

Historian, writer, curator, promoter, producer, and national and international researcher of caricature. A graduate in History from the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon, he has curated more than 300 exhibitions and authored over 40 studies and biographies of cartoonists. As a cultural producer and historian of graphic humor, he has organized hundreds of exhibitions, conferences, and festivals in several countries. He served as director of the Casa do Humor in Lisbon (1989–1990) and is the coordinator of Humorgrafe, a Portuguese producer of graphic humor events that has carried out over 300 initiatives. He also directed the National Press Humor Salon (1987–2006) and has authored more than 300 books. His research has explored humor studies across various countries, as well as museums dedicated to this form of expression, and topics such as “Aging with Humor” and “Humors of the World.” Among his distinctions are the Special Balanito (Moura BD, 1998), the Anim’Arte 99 Award (GICAV, 1999), and the Oscar of Caricature (2006), granted by a group of cartoonists in recognition of his 25-year career.

Outstanding Institution:

Quevedo Institute of the Arts of Humor (Spain)

A center for the study, promotion, and research of humor, created on December 20, 2011, by the Board of Trustees of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá (FGUA), Spain. Its purpose is to expand, transform, and project graphic humor within the academic and university spheres. Its objectives include fostering communication and cooperation between the university community and public or private institutions interested in the study and research of humor; strengthening and expanding educational activities at undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education levels to deepen the understanding of humor’s diverse aspects; promoting research activities on humor and their dissemination through publications and media; and engaging in international cooperation related to its mission. The IQH grants the Ibero-American Graphic Humor Award “Quevedos” and the Children’s Quevedos-Dos Awards every two years. It also co-organizes the annual GIN-UAH International Graphic Humor Competition, as well as the awards for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses on humor.
